Our Peru Solidarity

Our Peru Solidarity

Last month, more than 70 people had been killed in Peru after the worst flooding in two decades. Indeed, thousands of people have been made homeless and a state of emergency declared in more than 800 cities.  These tragedies affect the poor and many of those in Jesuit sponsored works.  In last week’s bulletin, Fr Fairbanks spoke about a “Dinner to Aid Peru” that would offer help and support to the many families, homes, and neighborhoods hit hardest by this natural disaster.  This dinner is a joint effort to raise funds among the 5 Jesuit works in Cincinnati to aid our sisters and brothers in need.  The Cincinnati Jesuit works are sponsoring a “Dinner to Aid Peru” Friday, May 19 at 6pm on the campus of XU.  Tickets are $50 a plate, and St X parish hopes to sell 30 tickets (3 tables).  Please call the office to purchase your tickets, or stop by our table today in the back of church.  Even if you cannot attend the dinner, you may make donations payable to “Bellarmine Chapel” and the donations will be forwarded to the Peru missions we all share in Lima.

“Rise Up Peru” is a short video that the Jesuits are using in Peru for their relief work. We will see an English translation of the same video to show at the “Dinner for Peru” on May 19th. This video certainly shows the problem of flooding and landslides, but at the same time it highlights the hope and solidarity that is emerging from these natural disasters. We all hope that ticket sales are moving forward!

St. Francis Xavier Parish has a long tradition of twinning with La Parroquia de la Virgen de Nazaret (the parish of the Virgin of Nazareth) in Lima, Peru.  Since 1999, we have supported each other in solidarity of prayer, personal pilgrimage visits, and resources.

Their pastor, Jesuit Father Matt Garr S.J. has often visited us to celebrate the Eucharist with us to give a first-hand report of the wonderful work that is being done in the Lima neighborhood where the small parish is located: the area is called El Agustino.

In January 2004, in January 2006, and again in 2008, a group of pilgrims from St X traveled to Peru to visit our sister parish in person.  In June 2016, a group of benefactors from the Midwest Jesuit Province made a special pilgrimage to Peru to visit our sister parish, as well as other related Jesuit ministries.

In the spring of 2017 we plan to visit our sister parish once again.  This will be a great opportunity for us to make these valuable connections with the people of El Agustino, who have much to teach all of us.  Our trip will also include a visit with Mr. Paul Lammermeier, a close friend of St Xavier and St X High and many from Cincinnati.  He has founded three homes for Peruvian young people:  Casa Javier, Casa Ignacio, and Casa Teresa.  You can read about Paul’s efforts at http://lammermeier.org

Anyone who is interested to maintain this solidarity between our two parishes is welcome to attend our next meeting of "Our Peru Solidarity" Monday January 9 @ 7pm in the parish center beneath St Xavier Church.  You are welcome to join us, even though you do not plan to make the trip in June.  We need your interest, help, and prayers.

More information will appear on this web site as the weeks draw near.
